The cattle almost disappear into the grass until their dark coats catch the light. Then each back makes a clear line across the green.
There is a different scale to this view from the one inside a garden. The grass runs around the animals, the trees gather behind them, and the pasture carries on to the edge of the frame. A few heads are lowered; another faces the camera.
The Barnyard belongs in the journal because animals are part of this place. Their photographs bring something that a room, a planted bed, or a landscape cannot supply: an individual presence in the middle of the scene.
Here, that presence is wonderfully matter-of-fact. The cattle have their attention elsewhere. We get a view of them in passing, with the long grass still taking up most of the picture.
